Greetings Smith Middle School Families,

Can you believe that it is the end of the year? WOW! We have been very fortunate to have had a productive, successful, and rewarding year. Students, families, and staff have all worked to do their very best and I believe we have given it our all.

A change in the school calendar has been approved. The last day of school, June 17, is a HALF DAY. Dismissal will be at 11:25. Please mark your calendars as we recognize that this will impact child care.

It is also important to note that the school’s web address, www.smithmiddle.org, will be changing as the district implements a system-wide web address for all four schools and the Central Office. At this time, we anticipate the change over to occur on or about June 8. We hope to be able to link the old address, www.smithmiddle.org, to our anticipated address of www.shschools.net. From this site, you will be able to link to all four schools. Teacher web sites and links will stay the same as they have been. We wanted to make this change at this time so that our new address will be up and available for the start of the new school year.

As we wind down the last few days of the school year, there are still several events that will be taking place. June 2 at 7 p.m. is the annual Spring band concert. I hope that you can join us.

Field trips abound in the month of June. The Fifth Grade will be traveling to Boston from June 10-12 to journey along the Freedom Trail. On June 13, the Eighth Grade will be going to High Meadows Park in Connecticut and on June 17, the Seventh Grade will be traveling to Look Park in Northampton. The Seventh Grade trip will be from 7:50 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Students will be expected to be picked up at 2:00 p.m. at the Middle School (The trip could not be re-arranged with the change in the school calendar. Teachers have elected to maintain the trip as it stands for the students. These times are correct even with the change to the last day of school.)

Step-Up Day will be June 16 at MHC at Chapin Auditorium. All 8th graders are expected to be at Chapin for 5:45. Seating for families will be at 6:00 with the ceremony beginning at 6:15. This is a special ceremony and we would like all 8th grade students and their families to attend. Remember, if you need to attend summer school, you must pre-register and notify the main office in order to walk for Step-Up.

Again, thank you for your contribution to a successful year here at the Smith Middle School. I hope that you and your family have a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable summer vacation.

Best regards,

Snow Closure Information

The following information will assist you when the weather is uncooperative.  Emergency closure/delayed start decisions are made beginning at

5:30 A.M. for the day.  Information is provided to the following media:  WGGB (Ch. 40)WWLP (Ch. 22), and WSHM-CBS (Ch. 3) on the television and the following radio stations:  WHYN (560 AM and 93 FM), WTTT (100.9 FM), WHMP (1400 AM and 99.3 FM), WAQY (102 FM), and WMAS (1450 AM and 95 FM).  Also, when schools are closed for the day, all classes and school activities are canceled.  When we have a delayed start, every effort is made to maintain timely bus service every day.  But, when road conditions are poor, or the weather is extremely cold, bus schedules can be disrupted or slowed.  We appreciate parents’ understanding and flexibility
